Over the last several years I have had the chance to visit with School Board members, superintendents, principals, and school administrators who have confidently said words to the effect of "we've got this" when asked about school safety.

When I hear "we've got this," I always what that actually means. The answer is almost always "we're working with local law enforcement," or "we have a parent who is a police officer/firefighte...

As students, staff, and parents we want to trust our School Board when they tell us that safety is their number one priority. Here is a simple question regarding a federal safety mandate that will help you verify this commitment.

Does your school district have a FEMA approved Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP)?

What is an LHMP?

Approved LHMP’s are developed by district stake-holders and experts following a process pro...

Last week I was talking to a friend who is involved in his school’s campus safety committee. His district has partnered with the Campus Safety Group to get back into compliance with California’s Comprehensive Safe School Plan law, and he had just looked at the compliance tools.

“Listen” he said, “I have no time for visitor badges and dress codes! Our focus has to be on active shooters and lock-downs!”

My friend, like many others...

This is the first in a series of posts designed to foster a “culture of compliance” regarding responding to lock-down or active shooter scenarios.

A century ago, fires on campus were a significant worry as students and staff were frequently being seriously injured or killed in those events.  As a result, federal, state, county, and local laws and ordinances were developed.  These regulations created consistent fire safety pract...

There are many lessons from the recent domestic violence related tragedy in a San Bernardino classroom and we can see the District has taken swift action by initiating much more stringent campus visitor policies.

We congratulate the school board for taking swift action, however, what SBUSD, as well as every School Board across the country must keep in mind is that the expectation of written policy is only as goo...

There is a lot of talk about school safety plans. At CSG we believe it is important to clearly identify what is expected regarding campus safety and how to assure our schools are meeting those expectations.

Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

This is what most folks think about when we mention safe school plans. An ERP has several specific components as well as common applications. Generally speaking, the ERP addresses environmental o...

From disenfranchised students in Colorado, to a mentally deranged man in Connecticut, to the threat of terrorism, all the way to internet based “hoaxes” we have come to understand that students of all ages and their teachers are significantly more likely to face a disruptive and even dangerous event on campus.

As parents we desperately want to believe that our institutions have prioritized safety and are providing meaningful...

As we’ve discussed in here before, student safety can be a paralyzing topic, specifically in the shadow of horrific campus events. Still, it is essential that we honestly address student safety in a perspective based manner in order to have a positive impact.

If you have been following the Campus Safety Group, you know we advocate institutional accountability by asking parents and students to insist and verify that our schools...

Safety is always at or near the top of the list when parents are asked about their educational concerns. Experts agree the campus safety requires a vibrant community partnership as well as a commitment to continually assess and respond to factors known to impact safety.

Many states require campus safety planning.

California has a law requiring each public K-12 school to have a campus safety plan that reflects partnerships and...
